Lincolnton included in ‘50 Best’ towns book
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
Oct. 26 - Educational and recreational opportunities have earned Lincolnton one of the best places to live in the south, so say authors Gerald W.
Sweitzer and Kathy M. Fields.
The co-authors have published a book, “The 50 Best Small Southern Towns,” in which Lincolnton is listed.
Seven pages of the book describe the historical background of Lincolnton as well as its favorable living conditions to date.
“The spirit of volunteerism, civic pride and responsibility run deep in this small town,” the book states.
Lincolnton is among six cities in North Carolina listed in the publication — the others being Boone, Hendersonville, Morganton, Mount Airy and Southport.
Sweitzer and Fields visited more than 150 sites to offer insightful information on their relocation guidebook.
In order to be featured in the book, each town had to meet certain qualifications: population under 25,000, positive population growth, readily available
cultural and recreational attractions, adult education opportunities, healthcare options and Internet access.
Lincolnton met the challenges set by the authors.
“They looked at how well-rounded we are,” said Ken Kindley, president of the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.
Following a description of the city and its history, information is given on location, housing options, recreational highlights, cultural scene, natural
environment, economic and education profiles, healthcare and vital statistics (climate, median incomes, etc.).
In the preface, the authors describe their search for a small southern town when looking for a new home. The new publication is supposed to act as a guide for
that purpose.
“I read some of what they’ve written, and we’re in there with some really nice towns,” Kindley said. “Of course, it really is a nice place to live.”
