Businesses expand through East Lincoln along N.C. 16

Construction along N.C. 16 between highways N.C. 150 and N.C. 73 has become more visible in East Lincoln over the past few years. The Shoppes at Waterside is just one of the many retail omplexes that have seemed to spring up out of nowhere since the area's development was started.  (Photo by Jenny Walling / Lincoln Times-News)

Denver and the West Lake Norman area, also known as East Lincoln, are the fastest growing parts of the county.

N.C. 16 is an example of an area which is constantly thriving with growth.

A popular spot is the intersection of N.C. 73 and N.C. 16, where many shopping plazas, apartment complexes and chain restaurants have congregated.

Some of the new additions include the Triangle Crossroads, a shopping plaza  which hosts a Food Lion and Eckerd Drugs, among others. Located next door is an old Burger King building, on the verge of becoming a Bojangles. Beside that is People’s Bank.

Across the street is Arby’s, and  a grand opening for the BP service station next door is expected soon.

Diagonal from there is The Shoppes at Waterside, with a Harris Teeter and a Blockbuster Video.

There is some construction at the Shoppes beside Harris Teeter, where a retail building will be built for lease.

Located behind the shopping plaza is Waterside Apartments and the new location for Waterside Crossing Professional Center, where several other businesses will be located.

The Professional Center is currently under construction and is scheduled to open Christmas day.

The property is a site by Carlsen Douglas Development, who develop retail and office space in the Lake Norman area.

The developers also have a site on N.C. 16 called Lake Norman Village. It is the home to Subway and several other retail businesses.

Behind this development will be the site for Waterside Office, which will be the home to Sylvan Learning Center. Across the street from Lake Norman Village is the Lincoln Medical Center Healthcare Pavilion.

The complex will house specialty physicians of internal medicine, orthopedic surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, mammography and physical therapy.

The medical pavilion is the result of a consultant study, which cited the need for additional physicians in east Lincoln.

Other construction on N.C. 16 includes expansion of the Sailview Square shopping plaza further north.

The plaza is located next door to the new Safari Miles Bar and Grille, a seafood, pasta, and steak restaurant which had its grand opening last Tuesday.

Located a little further north on N.C. 16 is Natalie Commons, where a Pizza Inn is located. Construction is present there as well. This is across the street from the Mayberry Diner.

Continuing north there is SmithStone Subdivision, a recently-built residential addition which has 345 homes surrounding a yacht club and waterfowl preserve.

Keeping up with the growing population in the area, Lincoln Charter School is also a fairly new addition to N.C. 16.

There is also Westport Medical Plaza across the street from the school.

There are many other subdivisions on N.C. 16 which are under construction, such as the Sandpiper Bay subdivisions.

Another new school in Denver is Rock Springs Elementary.

At the N.C. 150 junction, there is a swarm of food chains, including a Taco Bell, KFC and Subway.

This is also the location of a second People’s Bank and Food Lion.

Across from this shopping plaza is the site for East Lincoln’s first ABC store.

The local store will draw customers from an unusually large area. There is no other ABC store driving south on Highway 16 until I-85 near Charlotte.
