North Lincoln shaping up

By JACQUELINE CASEY, LTN Staff Writer

September 6, 2002 - By mid-October all of North Lincoln High School will be under roof, putting the project slightly ahead of its expected August 2003 completion date.

“We anticipate the entire building being in the dry within 35 to 40 days,” Associate Superintendent Ed Hatley told the Lincoln school board during its monthly meeting Wednesday.

One year into the construction phase of the project, North Lincoln High is taking shape. When completed the 210,000-square-foot school on Lee Lawing Road in the Pumpkin Center community will house 1,200 students, relieving overcrowding at East Lincoln and Lincolnton high schools.

School construction is following a six wing design — four classroom wings and a cafeteria wing, in a half-circle around a central office/media center wing.

Masonry walls have been erected in the school’s central office and media complex and classroom wings have been constructed.

Concrete has been poured in the school entry where columns support a soaring 34-foot ceiling. Hot water tubes have been installed underneath the concrete for heating.

Walls are also up on the school’s two gymnasiums, one large enough for two full basketball courts, the second wide enough for one.

The school’s main hallway stretches the 660-foot width of the school.

Work will begin Monday on the school stadium, which will be visible from N.C. 150.

As vehicles enter the school driveway from Lee Lawing Road, the stadium will be to the right and the school to the left. Athletic fields will be straight ahead.

Students will access the athletic fields from the school over a bridge to be constructed over a creek at the back of the property.

The building exterior of the school already bears the school name and the outside gym and auditorium masonry features identifying designs.

The school, stadium and athletic fields are being built on 76 acres of a 114-acre site.

Orkan Architecture designed the building. M.B. Kahn Construction Company is managing the project.

The board also heard an update on the new east Lincoln elementary school project underway on St. James Church Road.

Site clearing has been completed, a temporary road has been installed with curbs and stone, and all wings have been laid out.

In the next weeks, foundations will be completed and construction of masonry walls will continue. Site utility documents will also be issued for bid.

At West Lincoln High School, building and renovations have been completed and classes are being held in all areas except the former science wing.

A dedication ceremony for the West Lincoln project will be held Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m.

The new high school, elementary school and construction and renovation at West Lincoln are funded by the $36 million bond voters approved in 2000.
