Dot Johnson affects many lives during 60 years

August 2, 2002 - Dot Johnson has been working at the County Extension office for 60 years.

But perhaps even more amazing than her job history and background is the number of people whose lives she’s affected.

Officers find 360 marijuana plants

August 2, 2002 - VALE —More than 360 grown marijuana plants weighing a total of 63 pounds were found on the property of a Vale man Monday.

In one of the biggest live marijuana seizures in years, Lincoln County officers moved onto the property of Harold Ray Scronce, 5115 Hoyle Farm Road, on Thursday after obtaining consent to search..

Lincolnton to beckon tourists

Authority funded by room tax

August 2, 2002 - The Lincolnton Tourism Development Authority wants to increase and promote tourism in Lincolnton.

The formation of the authority stems from a city room tax which went into effect July 1.

‘Lab in a box’ to promote Internet access in county

August 5, 2002 - Bringing Internet access to people who aren’t lucky enough to be able to log on is the goal of the e-NC initiative.

And with the help of a $12,000 e-NC grant, the Lincoln County eCommunity committee is one step closer to achieving that goal.

Nine to compete for 2002 Apple Queen title

‘Living in America’ is theme

August 5, 2002 - Nine young women from Lincoln County will vie for the 2002 Apple Queen title Saturday night at the Citizens Center.

The contestants will compete for the crown and scholarship money. The queen will receive a scholarship for $2,500. First runner-up will win $1,000; and second runner-up will get $750. Miss Congeniality — chosen by the contestants — will receive $50 and an engraved apple plaque.

Service kicks off camp meeting

August 5, 2002 - DENVER — Visitors walking the paths through Rock Springs Campground Sunday morning heard the sounds of worship and praise echoing from the arbor.

The Campground Choir chimed in singing “How Great Thou Art.”

Crowds gathered under and around the arbor this weekend for the opening of Rock Springs Camp Meeting. A concert was held Saturday night, and morning worship was held Sunday. (Left) Kendyll Dellinger, 7, and her brother Chip Dellinger, 10, joined hundreds of others in praising and singing hymns.

Swimming advisory removed

August 7, 2002 - A swimming advisory for part of Lake Norman was lifted Monday after test results determined the lake is safe.

The advisory came after 2,500 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into an area of the lake near Westport Marina July 31.

August 7, 2002 - With a single word, 10th-grader Beth Barnes summed up the reaction of West Lincoln High parents and students to the school’s new look: “Wow.”

“It’s incredible. I didn’t think it would look like this,” Beth said during an open house Monday evening as she toured West’s new science wing with her mother.

Residents uninformed on school property

August 7, 2002 - Residents of St. James Church Road found out about plans for a new elementary school when they saw trees being pushed down around them.

And they told County Commissioners and County Planning Board members — who were being asked to rezone the property — Monday at a public hearing that they don’t understand why they weren’t informed of the plans.

Lincoln students head back to class

August 7, 2002 - At 7:20 this morning Union Elementary School fourth-grade teacher Debbie Cook made final touches to her classroom as she listened to classical music. Outside the classroom door, her students’ names were displayed in a fishing net labeled “Miss Cook’s Catch.”

These students waited in anticipation on buses this morning, ready to start their first day of the new school year at Union Elementary. Traffic came to a standstill on Reepsville Road, approaching the school, located in western Lincoln County. The more than 100 buses traveled their routes this morning and 1,600 employees returned to work at Lincoln Counties 19 schools.
