Swimming advisory removed
From staff reports
August 7, 2002 - A swimming advisory for part of Lake Norman was lifted Monday after test results determined the lake is safe.
The advisory came after 2,500 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled into an area of the lake near Westport Marina July 31.
The spill was the result of a broken sewage pump at a private residence at 7858 Blackwood Drive. The broken pump caused sewage to pour into the yard of the
residence, and then eventually run into the lake.
Lake water was tested from contamination since the spill occurred, and according to the Lincoln County Department of Public works, test results have returned
to normal and acceptable levels.
Four consecutive water results were found to be normal.
The property owner was issued a Sewage Violation Notice by the Lincoln County Health Department and ordered to have the system repaired.
Repairs were completed on Aug. 1.
The Health Department encourages property owners to inspect sewage systems frequently. Any signs of malfunctioning should be reported to the Environmental
Health office in Lincolnton immediately.
