School supplies donated

From staff reports

August 7, 2002 - Just how far will 12,650 sheets of ruled notebook paper stretch?

Kathy Vinzant hopes it’s far enough to reach every needy student in Lincoln County.

The notebook paper, along with 570 pencils, 105 erasers and 17 bottles of Elmer’s School Glue and more than a dozen bookbags were among the thousands of items donated to Lincoln County Coalition Against Child Abuse’s effort to provide school supplies for children identified by school staff and the Department of Social Services.

Three businesses, Winn Dixie on N.C. 27 West, Bi-lo, Family Dollar and three churches, Denver and Boger City United Methodist and Emmanuel Lutheran participated by allowing collection boxes to be set up for donations.

The response during the three week collection period was overwhelming, says Vinzant, who was named coalition director in early July.

“I’m just touched by the community response,” she says. “It is just awesome.”

Donations even included combination locks, a calculator and journals.

Items will be distributed during the next week as school and DSS staff identify needs.

It’s not too late to donate items, says Vinzant. Anyone wishing to do so can contact her at 704-736-8456.
