Nine to compete for 2002 Apple Queen title

‘Living in America’ is theme

August 5, 2002 - Nine young women from Lincoln County will vie for the 2002 Apple Queen title Saturday night at the Citizens Center.

The contestants will compete for the crown and scholarship money. The queen will receive a scholarship for $2,500. First runner-up will win $1,000; and second runner-up will get $750. Miss Congeniality — chosen by the contestants — will receive $50 and an engraved apple plaque.

A panel of five judges will chose the winner based on private interview, swim suit and evening gown.

The mistress of ceremonies will be Lesley Dawn Royster, Miss Gastonia 2002. Royster placed in the top 10 semi-finalist at the Miss North Carolina pageant in June. She will join the nine contestants and the reigning Apple Queen, Jaime Goodson, entertaining the audience with song and dance.

This year’s contestants include:

Hayley Marie Beam, 19-year-old daughter of Aubrey and Frankie Beam of Cherryville. A graduate of West Lincoln High School, she is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Lacey Anne Beam, 17-year-old daughter of Guy and Trudy Beam of Cherryville. She is a senior at West Lincoln High School.

Dayna Leigh Chapman, 18-year-old daughter of Michael and Deborah Chapman of Denver. A graduate of East Lincoln High School, she is a freshman at Wingate University.

Elizabeth Marie Jolley, 19-year-old daughter of Scott and Donna Jolley of Lincolnton. A graduate of West Lincoln High School, she is a junior at Georgetown College.

Darie Nicole Mathis, 20-year-old daughter of Dale Ray Mathis of Lincolnton. A graduate of Lincolnton High School, she is a sophomore at Gaston College.

Emily Stepp, 20-year-old daughter of Jeff and Thola Stepp of Lincolnton. A graduate of Lincolnton High School, she is a student at Meredith College.

Autumn Brooke Stokes, 17-year-old daughter of Stoney and Polly Stokes. A graduate of East Lincoln High School, she is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Grace Diane Vargas, 17-year-old daughter of Sara and Alexander Vargas of Lincolnton. A graduate of Lincolnton High School, she is a freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Alesha Nicole White, 20-year-old daughter of Terry White and Lisa and Kevin Whitener, all of Lincolnton. A graduate of Lincolnton High School, she is a student at Gaston Community College.

The 2002 Apple Queen Scholarship Pageant will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Citizens Center.

The theme for this year’s pageant is Living in America. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce on Main Street; Simply Elegant, 204 South Academy St.; and Peoples Bank, Hwy. 16 and 73 in Denver.

Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door for adults, $6 in advance and $8 at the door for children 12 and under and senior citizens.
