Golf club revels ‘Living Day’ at its finest

Published July23, 2003

By AMY WADSWORTH, Staff Writer

Verdict Ridge, a community golf and country club in Denver, opened its doors Saturday to show what it had to offer with “Better Living Day.”

“We want to promote our community and let people know a lot happens in this county,” said Scott Knox, Development Manager. “Our community is four years old and offers a golf course, swimming, tennis and fine dining.”

The community has 100 families living there right now. Knox said he would like to see that number grow up to 500.

Verdict Ridge is located 30 minutes from downtown Charlotte. It is close to the sheriff and fire department, Knox said. It is also located close to Lincoln County schools.

Chuck Turner, account executive, said Saturday was a great time to hold this event with so much going on.

The fire and rescue team was there to help promote safety, and Canadian national long golf drive champion Dave Mobley was there as a special guest. Putting contests were also scheduled through-out the day along with face painting and ice cream for the kids.

“It is a good way to enjoy the day with all kinds of events,” Turner said. “It is good to expose the community.”

The event benefited the “Rally for a Cure,” and Susan G. Komen Foundation to help raise breast cancer awareness.

Nicole Morgan, who lives in the development, was at the community pool with her two children, Harrison, 3, and Victoria, 2.

Victoria got her face painted at the pool as part of the Verdict Ridge event.

Morgan frequently comes to the pool in the mornings with her children.

She and husband, Jimmy made the move to the community three years ago from Matthews.

“We needed a bigger house,” Morgan said. “And my husband wanted to live on a golf course.”

Morgan said she does not play golf as much as her husband does, but she is wanting to learn.

“He enjoys it so much,” she said. “I want to be able to go out there and enjoy it too.”

Morgan’s husband works in Charlotte, while she stays home with the children.

She said the commute is the same length as when they lived in Matthews.

“It was really congested in that area,” she said. “Now it takes the same amount of time, if not shorter from Verdict Ridge.”

Morgan said the community is really booming and there are a lot of families with children.

“There are a lot of stay-at-home moms, which is great,” she said. “And when the kids get older, St. James Elementary is right across the street.”

Mitchell Price and Susan Stevens, tennis partners, love coming to the club to play.

Saturday they were taking a break beside the pool.

Steven’s husband has built several homes in the community. She does not live in the community but is a member of the golf course.

“They have really good social events here,” she said. “And it is so pretty driving in.”
