Man awaiting trial faces drug charges

Published July 2, 2003

Barbershop slaying

By JEREMY ASHTON, LTN Staff Writer

A Lincolnton man awaiting trial on murder charges was arrested Tuesday by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s narcotics office after a search of his residence turned up crack cocaine.

Alvin Dwight Fair, 23, of 2357 Lake St. has been charged with nine counts of trafficking cocaine.

Fair was indicted earlier this year for second-degree murder after allegedly shooting Jacques Tremayne Shipp, 24, Dec. 28 inside the Gentlemen’s Choice Barbershop on North Aspen Street.

He was released from jail on a $100,000 secured bond.

Lt. Gene Sain said the narcotics office had been gathering information on Fair for more than a year.

In April, Sain said, undercover officers began purchasing crack cocaine from some of the residents on Lake Street. The officers have made six total purchases.

On Tuesday, the narcotics office obtained a search warrant to check Fair’s house.

The officers who searched the residence found 6 ounces of crack cocaine. The drugs have an estimated street value of $7,200, Sain said.

Sain indicated Fair’s arrest will likely not be the last.

“There will be more arrests from this undercover investigation,” he said.

Fair’s arrest follows three drive-by shootings that occurred in Lincolnton between June 14 and June 23. The most recent was targeted at Fair’s house.

Sain was unable to comment on whether the shootings, and Fair’s alleged drug dealings were connected but acknowledged the shootings sped up his office’s investigation.

Sain credited several officers in the arrest: detectives Jason Ramsey, Steve Molnar, Tracie Pickett and Tim Johnson; Lt. Ronnie Matthews, Lt. Howard Eason and Lt. David Carpenter.

Fair was being held in the Lincoln County Jail under a $1,000,000 secured bond. His first appearance in court on the trafficking charges was set for Wednesday morning.
