Stewart files for schools position
By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer
July 8, 2002 - A Lincolnton man is making his second bid for school board.
Joe Stewart filed in late June for the Howard’s Creek Township. He also ran in 1996.
Stewart is critical of the current board, writing in a press release that the board “appears to be controlled by the same status quo.”
Stewart questioned if the board manages its resources wisely. He was critical of the board’s practice of sending more than one member to out-of-town training
conferences.
Stewart supports the majority of the school board being parents of children currently in the school system. He also wants to see a two-term limit imposed on
board members. Currently, there is no term limit.
Stewart has worked for American Tire Distributors, formerly Heafner Tire Group, for 20 years. He has held positions including assistant branch manager,
assistant credit manager, purchasing analyst, assistant director of sales and marketing. He is now an equipment, supplies and parts buyer.
Stewart and his family moved to Lincolnton in 1985 with Heafner Tire.
Stewart and his wife Elizabeth McGill Stewart have four children. The Stewarts are members at First Wesleyan Church where Joe Stewart serves as worship leader
and senior men’s Sunday school teacher.
Joan Avery, Wink Finger and Ron McConnell have also filed for the Howards Creek seat.
Bobby E. “Rusty” Beam and Robin Brown are running in the Lincolnton-outside-city-limits race. In Catawba Springs, Lynn Anderson, Karen Bolick and Jean
Dellinger are running.
The race is non-partisan and will be decided when voters go to the polls in November.
