Teacher seeks school seat

By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer

July 5, 2002 - A veteran teacher hopes to represent Howards Creek Township on the Lincoln County School Board.

Joan Avery filed last week for the seat.

Avery says she will bring to the board her 31 years as a teacher and time as a county North Carolina Association of Educators leader.

She taught health and physical education at West Lincoln High, worked as a media specialist at Union, Asbury, Park and Oaklawn elementary schools and taught third grade at Love Memorial Elementary. Avery served as county NCAE president in 1998-99.

“I’ve gotten to know the community,” she said.

Avery wants to strengthen efforts to retain retiring teachers and to hire more locally.

“Lincoln County should hire home-grown teachers and administrators before considering candidates from outside the county,” she said. “Local candidates have a stronger sense of loyalty to the school system and their home communities.”

Growth is another concern for Avery. She supports a new elementary school for western Lincoln County and expansion at West Lincoln Middle School.

Avery holds degrees in library science, physical education and nursing. She taught last year at Love Memorial Elementary through the lateral entry program. She is currently working on a degree in elementary education at UNC-Charlotte.

She and her husband Harry Avery have a son and a daughter.

Avery is a member at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where she is in the hand bell choir.
