Arrest made in dead dogs investigation
By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer
July 3, 2002 - A Lincolnton man has been arrested on charges of leaving his two dogs locked in a downtown building where they died.
Gary Smith, 39, of 104 Carolina Circle, was arrested and charged with one count of animal cruelty Monday, according to police reports.
Police spotted Smith’s car outside the Budget Inn motel on Generals Boulevard in Lincolnton at around 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Lt. David Carpenter of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office made the arrest.
Smith offered no information as to why he left the dogs alone, police said. He was transported to jail around 2:45 p.m.
The investigation began June 25 when the Lincolnton Police Department was notified of a smell coming from AGS Prosthetics, Inc, 110 Courtsquare.
When officers entered the building, they found two full-sized dogs that had apparently died a couple of weeks prior from dehydration and starvation.
Smith worked in the building making dentures and partials for area dentists.
An employee of a nearby business said June 27 that she was shocked to find out the dogs were dead.
She described Smith as “very loving” to his dogs.
Smith was released from jail at around 8:50 p.m. Monday on $1,000 secured bond.
He is scheduled to appear in Lincoln County District Court on Aug. 6.
