Hero to be honored By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer July 1, 2002 - A young hero will be honored tonight by the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners. Stanton Shirley, 12, will be recognized for his heroic efforts that saved the life of a friend. Jessica Williams, also 12, nearly drowned in Lake Norman June 21. Stanton said he was acting on instinct when he pulled Jessica from the water. Jessica was in good condition this morning at Carolinas Medical Center. Emergency Medical Services Director Ron Rombs and County Fire Marshal Mike Futrell will present Stanton with certificates, plaques and other goodies, and he will also receive gifts from local businesses. A special surprise is also in the works, Rombs said. “Something tragic happened and he performed a heroic measure and saved her,” Rombs said. Stanton’s recognition is at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Room on the third floor of the county offices. |
