W&S budget passed

Published June 18, 2003

By AMY WADSWORTH, Staff Writer

The budget ordinance for the fiscal year 2003 and 2004 was approved at the East Lincoln County Water and Sewer District meeting Monday night. The sewer services will cost a total of $3,077,165.

“I think it is an adequate budget,” said Larry Craig, vice chairman. “Since we are faced with expansion, we chose to keep the tax rate the same so it would not pressure folks down the road.”

In new business, Steve Gilbert, Director of  Public Utilities presented the 20 year Capital Improvement plan for the water and sewer systems. In March, a grant of $36,000 was obtained from the NC Rural Center. With award of a grant, Olver, Inc prepared the improvement plan.

“It is essential to have this plan in place,” Gilbert said. “It will accommodate growth.”

The plan will be discussed again before the next meeting which is scheduled in September. The first step of the plan will take place in August 2003 if approved.

“This is quite a plan,” said Jerry W. Cochrane, Chairman. “Since this is the first time that we have seen it I do not think we can approve the plan without giving it more study.”

In other business:

    · Three voluntary annexations were approved for two commercial businesses on NC 73 and one residence on Henry Dellinger Road

    · Replies for the refund of  the grinder pump sales and services are due by August 5
