Child dies after pool incident

Published June 2, 2003

From staff reports

A 2-year-old child died this weekend after being pulled from a pool Saturday.

Stephen Burdette was pronounced dead at noon Sunday.

At 12:54 p.m. Saturday, emergency officials responded to a report of a possible drowning of a 2-year-old at 269 Low Bridge Road, according to Michael Keller, EMS operations manager.

Lincoln County EMS arrived at 1:08 p.m. to find family and first responders from Boger City and Lincolnton Fire Departments proceeding with resuscitative measures on the child.

Stephen had been pulled from a residential pool, and it was unclear how long he had been in the pool before the family found him, Keller said.

EMS and fire personnel continued resuscitative measures while Stephen was being transported to Lincoln Medical Center in critical condition.

At 2:15 p.m., he was taken from LMC to Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition, where he died the next day.

The incident is under investigation by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
