Teacher of the Year honored

North Brook’s Tallent surprised with new car

By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer

May 24, 2002 - A North Brook Elementary School teacher’s dedication to her classroom has earned her a 2003 Pontiac Vibe.

Michele Tallent was rendered speechless Wednesday afternoon when Lincoln County Schools Superintendent Jim Watson announced before her colleagues that she was the county’s Teacher of the Year. The surprise continued when Buddy Stasney of Griffin Buick-GMC-Pontiac handed Tallent a set of keys to the bright red Vibe.

“Usually teachers get rewarded with smiles, hugs, apples and notes from parents. This is unbelievable,” Tallent said after regaining her composure.

The award-winning teacher and her fellow educators trooped outside the school and piled into the car, playing the radio, honking the horn and laughing.

Tallent was nominated as teacher of year at North Brook by her co-workers. Judges selected five school-level teachers of the year to compete at the county level. Tallent now moves on to southwest teacher of the year competition.

“She’s wonderful. She goes way beyond what she has to do. Holly looks forward to going to school,” said Sheri Boyles whose daughter is in Tallent’s second grade classroom.

It’s the innovative projects that impressed Boyles. At Thanksgiving, Tallent transformed her classroom into a Native American community, setting up a teepee and inviting parents for a feast of berries, roasted corn, jerky and cornbread.

For Christmas, Tallent’s students made ornaments and delivered them to residents at Carolina Care Nursing Home.

The students sold candy to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

When the students wanted more reading material, Tallent helped them organize a yard sale of old toys.

Tallent is also known to stay after school and tutor students on her own time.

“She is here many, many hours,” said Phyllis Tallent, North Brook principal. “She is very passionate about what she does.”

Tallent will get to drive the car until next May. Stasney has agreed to sponsor a car for the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 teachers of the year.

Tallent, a 25-year classroom veteran, has a master’s degree in reading education. She and her husband Perry, who teaches physical education at West Lincoln High. have one daughter, Lily.
