McGregor: Remember helpers

Students honored at Academic Achievement Banquet

By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer

May 22, 2002 - Don’t forget who made you successful.

That message from New Orleans Hornets announcer Gil McGregor was delivered to some of Lincoln County’s top students Tuesday at the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce Academic Achievement Banquet.

“Some people have some dirty shoulders because they have allowed us to stand on them,” McGregor said.

He admonished the seniors to remember those parents, grandparents, teachers,  and church and community members who have supported them.

McGregor, who played basketball for Wake Forest University three decades ago, gave the students some advice for college — find a church, call home and stay focused.

The top ten ranked students from East, Lincolnton and West Lincoln high schools and their families filled the Citizens Center to hear McGregor speak and pick up scholarship awards.

McGregor warned students that expectations are high.

“We expect some pretty big things from you. Those that have gone ahead of you have made some pretty big messes,” he said.

While students have important roles in the future, McGregor cautioned them to not forgot what is most important.

“There is nothing like the love of one human being for another. Sometimes we don’t look at those we love as we go out to do our thing,” he said.

Seven students received scholarships Tuesday night. Patrick Fletcher was awarded the Vermont American Free Enterprise scholarship; Jessica Davis, Wal-Mart scholarship; Wendy Campbell, BPW scholarship; Mandy Walker, S. Ray Lowder scholarship; Diana Leon, local and regional Pilot Club scholarship; Olivia Dudley, local Pilot Club scholarship; Eric Loomis, Chamber of Commerce scholarship.

McGregor’s visit was sponsored by Carolina Trust Bank.

Banquet sponsors included the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce, Lincoln County Board of Education, Martin Eaddy, First Charter Bank, First Citizens Bank, Lincolnton Animal Hospital, Walter and Sissy Lineberger, McGuire Nuclear Station, Packaging Unlimited, Lincoln Medical Center, Carolina Furniture Mart, Kawai American Manufacturing, The Timken Company, Air Supply, Central Carolina Sprinkler, Hollis and Marilyn Henderson, Vermont American Corporation, Charles Harry Huss, City of Lincolnton, House of Pizza, Wal-Mart, Lincoln Charter School, Lincolnton Rotary Club, BellSouth, Hamilton and Austin Orthodontics, Lincoln Times-News, Lincolnton Business and Professional Women, Dr. Robert Cloninger, Century 21 Town and Country/Jim and Kathy Rhine and Julius Blum, Inc.
