Maryvale children dedicate memorial

By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer

May 22, 2002 - Children at Maryvale Daycare Center on Tuesday waved American flags and sang patriotic songs as they helped dedicate a monument to emergency workers and others killed Sept. 11.

The children have donated pennies, nickels and dimes since the attack on America last fall. With some help from parents, enough money was collected to create a memorial on the daycare center grounds.

“We wanted to do something. The American people forget too quickly,” said Mother Mary Louis.

The stone is engraved with police, fire and medic symbols, a dove and the words “Let us never forget all those who lost their lives on 9/11/01. God grant us peace.” An angel and bird bath sit beside the monument, which is surrounded by a flower garden. A path of stones and shrubs lead up to the site, and an American flag flies overhead.

“We pray for peace in our world, that we might not succumb to war or hatred,” said the Rev. Ed Sheridan, who asked for God’s blessing on police, firefighters and medical personnel.

Detective Tony Hallman from the Lincolnton Police Department raised the American flag as state Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Joines, EMT Becky Rhoney from the West Lincoln Rescue Squad and Lincolnton Firefighter Patrick King assisted.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the children distributed buttons they had made. The buttons read “Peace” and were decorated with red and blue fingerprints.

Sister Mary Norman coordinated the project’s design. Guido Lozano volunteered the landscaping work.
