Institute will offer NASCARtech training
By COURTNEY MARTIN, Staff Writer
May 22, 2002 - MOORESVILLE — If you have ever wanted to work for NASCAR, career training may be close than you think.
The NASCAR Technical Institute, a first-ever technical training school combining a complete automotive technology program and a NASCAR-specific motorsports
program, held a grand opening Monday night at Talbert Pointe Business Park.
“We’ve had a lot of interest,” said Institute Director Dennis Hendrix. “We are enrolling new students constantly.”
The Institute can train about 2,000 students daily in entry-level automotive technology and NASCAR expertise. The $12 million, 146,000 square-foot facility,
which sits on 19 acres, will have about 150 employees and already has 1,400 students enrolled for the first classes starting on July 1.
The facility was created to address the shortage of service technicians in the automotive industry, said Hendrix.
According to the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA), only two to three new technicians enter the workforce for every 10 technicians who retire
or change careers.
NASCAR partnered with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to create the educational facility. NASCAR and UTI developed the NASCAR Technical Institute to focus
on training the core skills needed to be an automotive technician.
Students will also learn about engines, electrical systems, drive trains, chassis construction and the history, rules and regulations of NASCAR.
The Institute offers a 57-week Automotive/NASCAR technology program where students attend 39 weeks of traditional automotive service technology training
and 18 weeks of NASCAR-specific training.
It offers a 69-week Automotive/NASCAR/Ford FACT (Ford Accelerated Credential Training) program where students will go through the 57-week Automotive/NASCAR
technology program plus 12 weeks of the Ford FACT program.
Expect to pay $24,350 in tuition costs for the 57-week program and $29,100 for the 69-week program. Tuition costs includes course books, three uniform shirts,
a cap and safety glasses.
