Spring break vote expected

Published April 09, 2003

Board to decide if vacation days should be restored

By JEREMY ASHTON, LTN Staff Writer

The Lincoln County Board of Education will decide tonight how much of a spring break students and teachers can expect.

The school board will convene at 7 p.m. in the conference room of the Board of Education building for its regular monthly meeting.

Among the major topics of discussion will be a new law passed last week by the General Assembly granting local boards the option of restoring a maximum of three vacation days lost to snow. Under the law, the lost classroom time would be made up by extending existing instructional days.

The law applies to this school year only.

Lincoln County Schools’ calendar originally called for a spring break covering 10 days, stretching from this Saturday through April 21. Snow reduced that break to a four-day weekend with April 17 and 18 as legal holidays.

School officials said Tuesday teachers were asked if they want vacation days restored in exchange for longer school days or if they would prefer to proceed with the current schedule. The survey showed an almost even split among the staff.

The board voted 4-2 at its March 12 meeting to recommend to Lincoln’s state representatives that the school calendar remain at 180 days. Fred Jarrett and Joan Avery voted against the measure.

Also on the agenda for the meeting, the board will examine appeals of student transfers within the boundaries of the new eastern elementary school attendance lines.

In a 4-3 vote at the March meeting, the board approved 17 transfers for fifth-grade students in that part of the county. The 60 other requests submitted were denied.

Board members who supported transfers for fifth-graders only said they couldn’t approve the rest due to concerns about filling up some eastern schools while leaving the new St. James Elementary School at half of its capacity.

The board is scheduled to hear from two parents affected by last month’s transfer vote.
