Scholarship to honor Buck Dellinger of WLMS April 29, 2002 - West Lincoln Middle School administrators announced the formation of the Buck Dellinger Memorial Foundation to honor the deceased coach and athletic director. Coach Buck Dellinger was well respected and liked by the thousands of students and coaches that he worked with over his 28 year career. The memorial funds will be used to establish an annual scholarship for a West Lincoln High School graduate. Other funds will be used to complete projects in the athletic department that Buck had hoped to carry out as part of a plan to upgrade the athletic facilities. A major goal of the athletic department was to replace the original bleachers in the gym with modern and attractive ones. “There has been tremendous desire on the part of the community to honor Buck,” according to Jim Harkey, assistant principal at WLMS. “We were just waiting until we could deal with the loss well enough to think clearly and do this the way Buck would want it carried out.” A committee of school staff and family will over-see the projects. The Buck Dellinger Foundation has applied for tax-exempt status so that donations will be tax-deductible. The popular athletic director was a star athlete at West Lincoln in the sixties and returned to his alma-mater to coach several sports at the high school and middle school level before settling in as athletic director several years ago. As AD, he worked closely with weight training, specific skills, and injury rehabilitation. “buck did so much to help so many people that we will never know how many lives that he changed. With this memorial foundation we can ensure that Buck’s legacy will continue to benefit the West Lincoln Community.” The memorial committee would also like to hear from anyone who has a story to tell of how Coach Dellinger may have assisted them or touched their lives.
