By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer
April 26, 2002 - This year’s Rotary Auction raised approximately $18,000 during its first night Thursday. The auction lasts through Saturday night.
“It’s a weeknight. A lot of folks are just finding out we are on the air tonight,” said Keithan Tucker, auction chairman.
Lamps, gas grills, salon gift baskets and mechanical tools were some of Thursday’s night hottest items.
The civic club uses the auction to raise money for its low interest student loan program.
This year area merchants and individuals donated $120,000 in goods and services for the auction.
“We’re real pleased with what’s been donated,” Tucker said.
Some of this weekend’s top items include NASCAR memorabilia, weekend trips to Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, a Charles Lisk face jug and wood bowl by Don Olsen.
A traditional style marble top hall table valued at $5,950 donated by Century Furniture, a Longines watch valued at just under $1,800 donated by Rankins
Jewelers and a framed, original water color by Tom Owen valued at $1,000 are some of the more expensive items up for bid.
Tools, donated by Vermont American, will be for sale all three nights in the general store.
Over 200 Rotarians from the Lincolnton, Denver-Lake Norman and Lincolnton Sunrise clubs and their families are volunteering with the auction.
The organization made 78 $2,000 low-interest loans in 2001. This year’s loan application deadline is May 1.
Since the program began in 1994, 192 students have received loans at 3 percent interest. No qualified applicant has been turned away, according to Gaye Howard, loan fund administrator.
Area restaurants and caterers are donating their services to the Rotary Café. Tonight Ann Leatherman of The Catering Company will provide lasagna. Mitchem’s Kitchen and the Lincoln House are serving chicken pie Saturday night.
Café hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $6 in advance and $7 at the door.
Bidders can visit the Citizens Center or watch the auction on Charter Communications cable channel 10. Individuals wanting to bid should call 704-530-4517 or 704-530-4518 to obtain a bidder
number. After getting the number, call 704-530-8244, 704-530-8245 or 704-530-8246 to bid.
Loan applicants are required to be Lincoln County residents, full-time students, maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average and have two co-signers that either
live in, or own property in the county. The loan can be used at a private or public vocational school, two- or four-year college or graduate program. There is no age limit for applicants.
Recipients must make semi-annual loan interest payments while in school. Repayments on the loan must begin no later than six months after graduation. Recipients
have up to 60 months to pay off the loan. The loan can be renewed each year of school if the applicant continues to meet the requirements.
