Strawberry Fest plans underway
By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, Staff Writer
April 24, 2002 - DENVER — Ripening strawberries mean an eastern Lincoln County tradition is not far behind.
Denver’s annual Strawberry Festival will be held May 18 at East Lincoln High School from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The day’s activities include an antique car show, silent auction, cow patty bingo and music.
The East Lincoln High Mustang band will perform. A disc jockey will also play tunes throughout the day. Several area dance teams are performing.
Carrigan and Lineberger farms will sell berries.
“We’re not going to run out this year,” said festival chairwoman Merlileen Johnson.
Over 30 vendors are expected. Some craft items include clocks made from 45 rpm records, woodworking, jewelry, children’s clothing, rocking horses and candles.
A massage therapist will be on hand.
Antique car owners will show off their vehicles during the event.
A car hood from the Dr. Pepper racing team is among the items up for bid during a silent auction. Also on the auction block are strawberry-shaped baskets
filled with berry-themed items including lotion, candy and socks.
The festival is sponsored by the East Lincoln PTA. It is the only school wide fund-raiser. The money will be split between all departments, Johnson said.
Johnson attributes an increase in vendors to the festival being listed in a statewide publication.
The festival began at Rock Springs Elementary School. When that campus underwent construction, the festival was moved to East Lincoln High. For a few years, the two schools shared the
profits. Later, the elementary school bowed out.
