County eyes future water, sewer needs

March 3, 2003 - A Lincoln County population that is expected to rise to 106,000 by 2022 has  officials taking a hard look at water and sewer issues facing Lincoln County.

During the county commissioners’ goal-setting session Wednesday, commissioners agreed that water and sewer are high-priority needs because they are essential to growth and development.

Hearing resumes on Cowans Ford project

March 3, 2003 - A public hearing for The Villages at Cowans Ford, a proposed 151-acre subdivision in eastern Lincoln County, will continue at tonight’s county commissioners meeting.

The application from The Denver Group LLC was continued from the board’s Feb. 3 meeting due to the large turnout of residents and the number of concerns they voiced.

Second wreck snarls traffic in Boger City

March 5, 2003 - Two children are in stable condition at Lincoln Medical Center following a head-on collision Monday afternoon.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of N.C. 27 and N.C. 73 around 4 p.m. Monday.

Planning Board OKs new subdivision

Village at Cowan’s Ford would include over 200 homes; 20-acre commercial site

The first hurdle to bring a new subdivision to east Lincoln was overcome Monday night.

The Lincoln County Planning Board recommended the Board of Commissioners approve a request by The Denver Group, LLC to rezone 151 acres for the construction of The Village at Cowan’s Ford.

March 5, 2003 - DENVER — A Denver dog made canine history this month, with an unprecedented showing at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

Gus, a five-year-old Belgian Malinois, placed second in the Herding Group at the Feb. 11 show in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Local support group formed to help for military families

March 5, 2003 - When military personnel are shipped out, the families left behind in base housing have the benefit of a built-in support group.

The family of active duty personnel, reservists and National Guardsman who don’t live in military communities don’t necessarily have that luxury.

Democrat women collect items for servicemen

March 5, 2003 - Democratic Women of Lincoln County will join the local chapter of the American Red Cross in the collection of items to be sent to military personnel.

During the February meeting at Lincolnton City Hall, president Madeline Elmore distributed leaflets to members listing items small enough to fit into one-gallon Ziploc storage bags.

City to hold hearings on proposed subdivision

March 5, 2003 - A proposal that could bring a 120-acre subdivision to Wilma Sigmon Road is up for public hearing at Thursday’s City Council meeting.

A hearing during the city planning board’s meeting in February drew a number of residents who spoke in opposition of the proposed annexation and development.

March 7, 2003 - “My step-dad taught me to bowl,” he says.

Love hasn’t been able to beat his step-father yet but did pretty well Thursday.

“It’s pretty cool. I’m winning.”.

Woman injured in single-car wreck

March 7, 2003 - A Cherryville woman is in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center this morning following an accident Wednesday.

Brenda Shull, 40, was the only person involved in the wreck, which occurred on Gaston Webbs Chapel Road Wednesday morning just over the Gaston County line.

$1 million bond set

March 7, 2003 - A High Shoals man is being held under a $1 million bond for allegedly trafficking cocaine.

Victor Meza Dominguez, 25, 212 Lincoln St., is charged with two felony counts of trafficking cocaine.

School officials start budget talks

County will be asked to support increase for capital improvements

March 10, 2003 - Superintendent Jim Watson methodically went through Lincoln County Schools’ recent accomplishments one morning last week.

In September, the school system learned 17 of 18 schools met or exceeded expected academic growth under the state’s ABCs testing model, with three earning special recognition.

Delta Mills will shut down

March 10, 2003 - MAIDEN (AP) — Delta Mills will shut down in May, leaving 120 employees out of work.

The plant produces cotton yarn used in woven apparel fabric for Delta Mills’ parent company, Delta Woodside, based in Greenville, S.C.

The closing will help the company remain competitive by reducing costs, according to a Delta Mills news release.

March 10, 2003 - Plans for a $1 million water interconnect between Lincolnton and Cherryville are one step closer to completion.

Cherryville has already applied for a Community Development Block Grant which will provide $600,000.

Concert membership drive begins

March 10, 2003 - The annual membership campaign of the Lincoln County Concert Association will begin on March 9 and continue until the first week in April.

The 2003-04 concert season will open on Aug. 17 with a concert by The Raleigh Ringers, a highly acclaimed handbell group. They treat their audiences to a variety of musical styles — sacred, secular, classical and rock and roll.

Lessons in leadership last a lifetime

March 12, 2003 - DENVER — A Denver man recently received recognition for a lifetime of service to the Boy Scouts of America.

Edgar Smith was awarded the Silver Beaver last month by the Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts — the highest honor a council can bestow upon a volunteer.

Bridge project closes popular short cut

March 12, 2003 - Drivers who travel Killian Farm Road will have to find an alternate route for the next three months.

The bridge, which spanned Anderson Creek 0.5 miles south of N.C. 73, has been torn down and is being replaced, closing the road until June.

March 12, 2003 - Rickey Parsley did everything right to burn debris: he obtained a permit, kept a water hose nearby and supervised the fire in his backyard.

NLHS overruns exceed $2 million

March 12, 2003 - Construction on Lincoln County’s new high school is proving to be more expensive than originally anticipated.

North Lincoln High School, located on Lee Lawing Road near Pumpkin Center, will cost $2.39 million more than was originally set aside in school bonds, according to figures presented at Monday’s joint meeting of the school board and county commissioners.

Strapped schools look for revenue

March 12, 2003 - Lincoln County Schools has some major needs this year, but paying for them may prove difficult.

Two new schools are debuting in August with the associated costs of staff and utilities. Existing facilities are in need of repairs. Local supplements have to rise to stay competitive with other school systems during a teacher shortage.

Teen-agers injured

March 12, 2003 - A 2-car collision on Wilma Sigmon Road at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday sent four teen-agers to the hospital with minor injuries, said EMS Training Coordinator John Watts. Two 16-year-old females and two 17-year-old females were taken to Lincoln Medical Center. A fifth passenger - an 18-year-old -  was uninjured. All passengers were wearing their seat belts, which played a part in protecting them, Watts said. Shortly after the crash, one of the passengers walked to a nearby residence to get help. March 17, 2003 - Sunday morning for Paul and Virginia Rhyne started out normal enough: they woke up early, ready to head to Cherryville for breakfast with their grandson. and his friends.

But when the three boys walked around to the back of the Rhyne’s Laboratory home at about 8:30 a.m., they got a big shock — in the middle of the Rhyne’s pool was their neighbor’s horse.

Abernathy assumes second-in-command

Veteran will miss drug task force work

March 17, 2003 - For Dean Abernathy, it was a tremendous career move, but one that forced him to leave behind a job he loves.

Abernathy was recently named captain of the Lincolnton Police Department, a position left open by Roger Hilton, who retired in December.

Lincolnton police chief to retire

March 17, 2003 - Lincolnton Police Chief Terry Burgin announced Friday that he will retire from the position he has held for 13 years at the end of this month.

Burgin has worked in law enforcement since 1974. He took over the position of chief at the age of 33 in 1989.

Overturned 18-wheeler

March 17, 2003 - An 18-wheeler driven by Sherrill Myrick of Rockingham overturned on N.C. 27 East Friday at around 1:15 p.m., forcing authorities to detour traffic around the scene for hours. Myrick was not hurt in the wreck, said Trooper L.W. Morrow of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Morrow, who witnessed the accident, said speed was not a factor. Habitat workers build new home for deaf couple

March 19, 2003 - VALE — The sounds of progress can be heard at the site of Habitat for Humanity’s latest house in Lincoln County.

Roads flooded, bridges washed out by downpour

March 21, 2003 - Overnight downpours soaked Lincoln County Wednesday night and Thursday morning, washing out bridges and delaying schools.

The South Fork River swelled, overflowing its banks.

Home fix-up grants offered to county residents

March 21, 2003 - Lincoln County residents who need help getting their homes up to standards could receive help from a state grant.

The $400,000 grant, from the N.C. Division of Community Assistance, will provide money to up to 14 qualified residences throughout the county.

Employees evacuated

March 21, 2003 - Employees at the Comforto plant, 1161 Burris Boulevard, were evacuated Thursday after an Argon leak was discovered in the plant. Susan Spake, county emergency management director, said that when she arrived there was a "vapor cloud so thick in the parking lot that you couldn't see the cars." A frozen pipe around the Argon tank blew up, authorities discovered, leaking Argon into the building through an open door, she said. Firefighters searched the building for employees, and Crouse Chief Milton Sain turned the tank off. Argon is a gas used for welding that displaces oxygen. No one was hurt as a result of the leak. March 24, 2003 - FLAY — The reminders of a war half a world away are everywhere in North Brook Baptist Church.

Farmers get relief on water

NLHS band to have at least 60

March 24, 2003 - When it opens in August, North Lincoln High School will have a marching band of at least 60 students.

What the band members wear when they take the field for the first time is still up in the air, though they are looking at some models.

New sheriff’s deputies test driving skills Saturday

March 24, 2003 - Blame the skid marks in the parking lot of West Lincoln High School on the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.

Five new sheriff’s deputies went through driving training Saturday, training that will clear the way for them to get their own patrol cars.

Vale woman killed in Friday crash

March 24, 2003 - A Vale woman was killed Friday following a head-on collision that sent another woman to the hospital with critical injuries.

Teresa Kay Taylor, 41, of 7150 N.C. 27, was pronounced dead at Lincoln Medical Center after the crash, which occurred just before 6 p.m. Friday.

Scarlet fever found

13 afflicted since January

March 26, 2003 - Healthcare officials in Lincoln County are asking parents of young children to be on the lookout for signs of scarlet fever.

At least 13 cases of the disease have been reported by physicians in Lincoln County since January, according to Lincoln Medical Center and the Health Department.

March 26, 2003 - Military representatives, local officials and Lincoln County residents will rally at the courthouse Friday in support of troops overseas.

“We’re going to show our troops they’re loved in Lincoln County,” said Dale Punch, commander of the American Legion Post 30. “With all the things we’ve been seeing on the news … it’s a nice gesture to let the troops know we’re here.”
