Woman injured in single-car wreck

By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer

March 7, 2003 - A Cherryville woman is in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center this morning following an accident Wednesday.

Brenda Shull, 40, was the only person involved in the wreck, which occurred on Gaston Webbs Chapel Road Wednesday morning just over the Gaston County line.

Susan Spake, director of Lincoln County Emergency Management, said it was one of the worst single-vehicle wrecks she has seen.

“For it to be a single vehicle accident, there was a lot of damage and some very serious injuries,” Spake said.

Shull was driving a blue Chevrolet S-10 west on Gaston Webbs Chapel Road at a high rate of speed, said P.B. Yount of the N.C. Highway Patrol. The posted speed limit is 45 mph.

Shull ran off the left side of the road, hit a small ditch and then struck a tree, Yount said.

The vehicle rolled, coming to rest on its right side, Yount said.

The driver’s side of the truck was smashed and mangled.

No one witnessed the wreck, but residents of a nearby home heard the crash and called 911.

Tryonota Volunteer Fire Department, Crouse Volunteer Fire Department,  Gaston EMS, Crowders Mountain Rescue and  Dallas Rescue responded to the wreck.

When rescue workers arrived, Shull was pinned inside the vehicle. She was conscious and semi-alert, Spake said.

“It was a really bad pin-in,” Spake said. “We couldn’t gain access to her without taking the roof off.”

Spake used an ax to break the windshield, and a Sawzall and Jaws of Life had to be used to remove the roof.

Shull was still trapped by the dashboard and steering column, Spake said.

Workers moved the steering column and cut Shull’s seatbelt.

The entire extrication took about 40 minutes, which is excellent, Spake said.

She lauded the ability of the different agencies to work well together.

“Crouse and Tryonota together — it just clicked,” Spake said. “Everyone knew we had a job to do.

“All I had to do was look up, and somebody would say ‘What do you need?’”

A helicopter was called to airlift Shull but could not take off because of fog in Charlotte, Spake said.

Shull was instead taken to Gaston Memorial Hospital and then transported to CMC.
