Democrat women collect items for servicemen

Special to the LTN

March 5, 2003 - Democratic Women of Lincoln County will join the local chapter of the American Red Cross in the collection of items to be sent to military personnel.

During the February meeting at Lincolnton City Hall, president Madeline Elmore distributed leaflets to members listing items small enough to fit into one-gallon Ziploc storage bags.

Suggested items included drink mix, playing cards, travel board games, current paperback novels, small packages of crackers or cookies, hard candies, Tootsie Rolls, baby wipes, sunscreen and Chapstick. Items will be collected and packaged by the Red Cross. Collection boxes will be located at City Hall and various other locations around town. For sites call the Red Cross office or contact any member of the Democrat Women’s group.

City manager Jeff Emory gave members a detailed account of services and functions authorized for cities only. He listed elected and appointed officials and their duties. Mayor Bobby Huitt and City Clerk Donna Flowers also contributed to the discussion.

Emory was joined by the mayor and city clerk in leading a tour of the offices at City Hall.

During the business session, the group decided to send a contribution to Westminster Presbyterian Church of Raleigh as a memorial to the late state treasurer Harlan Boyles.

The city manager accepted a token of appreciation from Elmore for the outstanding work of city employees during the severe weather of the 2002-2003 winter. The plaque will hang in City Hall.
