Second wreck snarls traffic in Boger City

March 5, 2003 - Two children are in stable condition at Lincoln Medical Center following a head-on collision Monday afternoon.
The wreck occurred at the intersection of N.C. 27 and N.C. 73 around 4 p.m. Monday.
A Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Joshua Michael Steele, 24, of Gastonia, was traveling east on N.C. 27, said N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Brent Hipp.
A minivan driven by Molly Mendola, 33, of Iron Station, was traveling west on N.C. 27, Hipp said.
The crash occurred when Steele attempted to make a left turn onto N.C. 73 and pulled out in front of the van, driven by Mendola, Hipp said.
“It was a head-on impact,” Hipp said.
Mendola’s three daughters were passengers in the van.
Joie, 3, was restrained in a child safety seat and was not injured, Hipp said.
Halie, 5, and Shelby, 7, were taken to LMC with severe injuries, Hipp said.
Both were wearing their seatbelts.
Steven Somerset, 13, of Lincolnton, was a passenger in Steele’s vehicle. Somerset’s arm was broken as a result of the wreck, Hipp said.
Somerset was discharged from LMC after he was treated, officials said.
Steele is charged with failure to yield to the right-of-way, Hipp said.
The wreck snarled traffic on both roads for about an hour while safety personnel investigated and cleaned-up the area.
An 5-car accident around noon Monday backed up traffic on East Main Street all the way to Boger City and sent three people to LMC, EMS officials said.
David Lee Kiziah, of Denver, apparently suffered from a seizure while driving his Ford truck east on Main Street, according to police reports.
Reports state that Kiziah struck a vehicle driven by Tyler Collins in the rear, then struck a vehicle driven by David Nicholas Saine and pushed it into the
intersection of East Main and Generals Boulevard.
Kiziah’s vehicle then struck a car driven by Beyonka Moss at the Wendy’s exit.
The truck then veered across four lanes of traffic and ran head-on into a vehicle driven by Derek Lee Titus.
Kiziah, Moss and a passenger in Moss’s car were taken to LMC, EMS said.
