New medical scanner offers faster photos

March 29, 2002 - Physicians are literally getting a better look at patients at Lincoln Medical Center.
The hospital just purchased a $350,000 Siemens E-Cam nuclear medicine camera.
The camera can perform heart, bone, liver and gallbladder scans, according to John Shelton, director of LMC’s imagining department.

School board will stay at six members

March 29, 2002 - The Lincoln County School Board will remain at six members until late this year, board
members voted Wednesday night.
Board members have the option to replace Jack Garner, who resigned last week but voted four-to-one to let the vacancy be filled during November’s general
election.

EMS worker fired, supervisor demoted

March 29, 2002 - A Lincoln County EMS employee has been fired and a supervisor demoted following an
investigation into a March 9 wreck on N.C. 150 in Crouse.
Accident victim Crystal Palmer was reported dead by an EMS crew while still trapped inside her Jeep Cherokee. The wreckage was peeled away from her in a
90-minute effort and Palmer was found to be alive. She was airlifted to Charlotte’s Carolinas Medical Center and is now receiving rehabilitation services at a nursing home.

March 29, 2002 - Lincoln County Clerk of Court Pam Huskey will step down from her office before her term expires, requiring a
court-appointed interim replacement.
Such an appointment could be advantageous to any of the eight candidates seeking the post.

Students want Knights to wear blue, black and silver
March 29, 2002 - Royal blue, black and silver will be the North Lincoln Knights’ school colors when the doors open in 2003, school
board members learned Wednesday night.
A group of future students selected the colors.
“Those are very unique colors,” said Associate Superintendent Ed Hatley. “The kids did a good job researching the colors.”

County’s largest — by dollar amount — land deal, and it all began with ditch digging.
That’s what William Edwards, owner of Bill Edwards Pipeline, a natural gas pipeline company, says about the purchase of a 38-acre side on Unity
Church Road in Denver.

A Maiden man died after his vehicle collided with a tree on Old Plank Road in eastern Lincoln County early Sunday morning.

March 27, 2002 - Lincolnton Police detectives have confirmed the identity of a man shot to death Friday in the parking lot of
Winn-Dixie Marketplace on N.C. 27 West.
Juan Rojo Vega, 26, who was living off Roseland Drive in Lincolnton, was shot several times while in his vehicle around 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Spelling competition nets nearly $10,000

G.E. Massey team is top finisher
March 27, 2002 - A Tuesday night spelling bee raised almost $10,000 for the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of
Commerce and the county’s Public Education Foundation.
Spellers from 34 corporate, school and civic teams competed. Enunciator Gaye Howard started easy with words like “unnerved.” As the night went on,
the words got more difficult.

Man killed in Winn-Dixie parking lot

March 25, 2002 - A Lincoln County man was fatally shot in the parking lot of Winn-Dixie
Marketplace on N.C. 27 West Friday night.
A man identified as Juan Rojo Vega, 26, was shot about four times around 8:30 p.m. while in his Nissan Pathfinder.
Vega was taken to Lincoln Medical Center and pronounced dead upon arrival.

Family remembers graveyard site

March 25, 2002 - Siblings Winnie Hoffman, Ray Hoffman and Ruth Hoffman Rhyne say they remember their
mother’s admonishments to respect the simple graveyard a few miles from their Walker Branch Road homeplace.
Today, whether the shallow holes are even graves is being called into question. Developers Troy Motz and Kenneth Tucker hope to construct a 24-home community
at the site. The land in question makes up a small portion of the tract.

Lincoln campaign exceeds goal
March 22, 2002 - Lincoln County United Way celebrated meeting its fund-raising goal victory Wednesday.
The 2001 campaign exceeded its goal by 16 percent, raising $435,195.
“It was a really great effort by all concerned,” campaign Chairman Seth Haney told supporters and recipient agencies during an annual meeting and luncheon at
Verdict Ridge Golf and Country Club.

and their employees during the agency’s annual safety awards ceremony Thursday at the Citizens Center.
The awards honor outstanding on-the-job safety achievements of each company during 2001. Recipients are based in Lincolnton, Denver, and Vale.

Controls sought after two communities fail to block developments
March 22, 2002 - Developers who want to build mobile home subdivisions will have to get permission from Lincoln County
Commissioners if the planning board has its way.
Planning board members reached that consensus during a work session though a formal vote is delayed until that board’s April 8 meeting. Before the matter
becomes law, commissioner will have to vote on it April 22.
