Huskey plans early departure
Superior Court judge to appoint an interim Clerk of Court
By COURTNEY MARTIN, LTN Staff Writer
March 29, 2002 - Lincoln County Clerk of Court Pam Huskey will step down from her office before her term expires, requiring a court-appointed interim
replacement.
Such an appointment could be advantageous to any of the eight candidates seeking the post.
Earlier this year, Huskey announced she would not seek another term. Her current term ends in Dec. 2, 2002. This week Huskey said she will step down in May.
Superior Court Judge Forrest Donald Bridges will appoint someone to take over until a new Clerk of Court is elected in November.
Huskey said she has made no recommendations to Bridges, and she is not sure he will even ask for a recommendation.
Huskey, who has been Clerk of Court for 16 years, has not endorsed a candidate to be her successor.
Democrat Teresa Peeler, a clerk’s office employee and candidate for the post, is considered a front runner for the interim position.
According to the Administrative office of the Courts — the office that oversees the clerk’s office — Bridges can appoint anyone he deems fit. There are no
restrictions on appointing someone who is running for the office.
Other candidates running for the position do not seem too worried about the possibility of Peeler becoming interim Clerk of Court.
“I don’t think that will make a difference in the election,” said Republican Darrell Harkey. “It could hurt (Peeler). Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.”
“I have the utmost respect for Pam Huskey and Judge Bridges,” said Democrat Sonny McSwain. “I trust that Judge Bridges will make the proper decision.”
The office carries a term of four years and pays about $69,000 annually.
