Man killed, boy critically hurt in area wrecks

By COURTNEY MARTIN, LTN Staff Writer

March 27, 2002 - One man was killed, a boy is in critical condition and a woman was run over by a truck during a rash of accidents that began Sunday.

A Maiden man died after his vehicle collided with a tree on Old Plank Road in eastern Lincoln County early Sunday morning.

Robert Aaron Jensen, 32, of 3553 Seminal Drive, was traveling around a curve just before the Mariposa Road intersection. The accident occurred around 1:40 a.m.

According to reports, Jensen was traveling about 75 mph in 55 mph zone when he lost control of his 1998 Chevrolet. The vehicle spun several times, left the road on the opposite side and struck a large pine tree.

Jensen was barely breathing after the wreck, said Capt.  L.T. Keener with the East Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department. He and another firefighter removed Jensen from his car.

“There was extensive damage to the vehicle,” said Keener. “If someone had been in the passenger seat, they would have been DOA.”

Jensen was flown to Carolinas Medical Center where he died.

“He was already out of the vehicle when I arrived,” said Trooper Jeff Stepp with the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Alcohol was present in the vehicle, said Stepp. But he could not say if Jensen was drinking before the accident.

A Sunday afternoon wreck on N.C. 150 has left a 9-year-old Rutherford County boy in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center.

Hank Rudolf was in the back seat of a 1995 Chrysler driven by his grandmother, Olivia Leen Painter, of Lincolnton, when the car was struck by a vehicle which ran a stop sign at the intersection with Shuford Road, according to Highway Patrol Trooper Brent Hipp. The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m.

The 14-year-old driver of the other car, a 1999 Dodge, had taken the vehicle from his parents without permission, said Hipp.

The boy will be charged through juvenile court, but juvenile authorities would not comment on the charges.

A truck ran over a Lincolnton woman Monday in a parking lot. She was treated at Lincoln Medical Center and released.

Tamera Whitener, 59, of 115 Robin Road, was walking behind a truck parked in the TRT Trailer Sales parking lot, 3302 Gastonia Highway, when the truck struck her.

The truck driver, Steven Joseph Hall of 2047 Swain Drive, Matthews, was backing up his 1996 Dodge to hook to a trailer when he hit Whitener with the left rear bumper. The truck’s rear tire then rolled over her.

Terry Whitener said her mother suffered bruises, mostly to her legs, and a hairline fracture to her pelvis.
