More than 500 bunny hoppers descend on Wal-Mart
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
March 25, 2002 - The crowd at Wal-Mart was ready to bunny hop into history Saturday.
Hundreds of children and adults gathered in hopes of breaking the world record for the longest bunny hop line — and landing an entry in the Guinness Book of
World Records.
“We’d like to see little old Lincolnton in the Book,” said Fran Keever who found her place in line with her daughter, Dawn Moody, and 2-year-old grandson Korbyn.
But the 523 hoppers who turned out were not enough to break Guinness’s 1,241 bunny hop record.
Participants registered in front of the store and numbers were not calculated until after the event.
The East Lincoln High School Band played while hoppers took their places around 2 p.m.
Enthusiastic participants wore bunny ears, hats, pins and even a fuzzy bunny outfit. Many practiced their hopping skills while waiting for the dance to begin.
Prior to the start, the line extended from the entrance of the store, down the sidewalk all the way to the garden center.
Once the band moved inside, the hopping began, led by Betsy Williams, a Lincolnton Middle School teacher who donned floppy ears for the event. Williams was joined by the Easter Bunny, Bob the Builder, Barbie and Goofy.
The group bounced through the aisles of the store, past cosmetics, toys and pets.
Just as the end of line disappeared into the store, the beginning of the procession hopped out of the garden center. With music from the band no longer in
earshot, hoppers began humming the tune and calling out dance instructions: “Right, right, left, left, front, back, hop, hop, hop.”
Children giggled while many red-faced adults gasped for air.
A few fathers — hesitant to actually hop — good-naturedly joined in behind their children, offering an occasional dance kick to the side or a tame leap. Others took short breaks when the
line lulled.
As the event came to a close, some teens continued hopping out to their cars.
Though the Guinness record was not broken, Patsy Fish, the Wal-Mart employee who coordinated the event, said it was a success.
“It’s wonderful. All the kids have had so much fun.”
