Veteran 4Her joins county’s Extension office
By DIANE TURBYFILL, LTN Staff Writer
February 17, 2003 - April Dillon is a 4Her through and through.
She joined the Extension club as a child and has never strayed. Dillon has stayed a part of the organization because she believes in its effectiveness.
“(4H) helps children develop life skills, and you see that growth through the years,” she says.
Dillon earned a bachelor of science in sociology from North Carolina State University and a master of science in human development and family studies from the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
While she grew up in North Carolina, she is new to Lincoln County.
“I hope to get out this week and look around the county … get a feel for the community,” she says.
Dillon may not be familiar with Lincoln County, but she is familiar with the county 4H program.
“I think Lincoln County has traditionally had a very strong program.”
Dillon came in contact with the area program when she was a 4Her. She remembers long-time 4H agent Carolyn Goodwin.
“I really value the traditional 4H program that Carolyn Goodwin has built here,” Dillon says.
Goodwin retired in June 2002. Dillon is taking over her position.
Dillon has served as an agent for six years, in Lee and Mitchell counties before coming to Lincolnton.
She plans to maintain the quality program that Goodwin has established with a few additions. Dillon would like to start up clubs in communities that may not
have them and work on public speaking skills of members.
“I hope I will be able to help a lot of 4H members develop their public speaking skills through 4H presentations.”
Dillon says through workshops and events like County Activity Day and District Activity Day, these goals will be accomplished.
The experienced agent says 4H has been a big part of her life, from teaching her useful skills to introducing her to her future husband, Steve.
“He grew up in 4H as well. That’s how we met.”
4-H is a learning program for boys and girls ages 5-18 structured to help youth develop their skills and talents to the fullest. 4-H youth participate in
activities, events and projects that develop and strengthen life skills.
