Rotarians prepare auction fundraiser
From staff reports
Feb. 27, 2002 - Lincolnton Rotarians huddled at assigned committee tables during their Monday meeting this week to prepare for the annual Rotary Auction
scheduled April 25-27 at the Citizens Center in Lincolnton.
Keithen Tucker, auction chairman, gave his kick-off pep talk, underscoring the need for Rotarians to get commitments from auction contributors by April 11.
Businesses and individuals from throughout the community donate a variety of items to the auction, including home furnishings, appliances, gift certificates
and sporting accessories.
Purchasers can bid on the items from their homes and see how they fared during a live broadcast on Charter Communications Channel 10.
The Rotary Sunrise Club and the Denver-Lake Norman Rotary Club will help staff the auction this year.
The auction started in 1994, raising enough money that first year to award $8,000 in low-interest loans awarded to four students. During the past eight years, it has grown steadily.
At the conclusion of last year’s auction, total funds collected since 1994 amounted to $817,000 in awards to some 412 students. This year organizers hope to surpass the $1 million mark in
cumulative contributions.
The loans are available to any student meeting the following criteria:
· residence in Lincoln County; · graduated from high school in Lincoln County, or obtained a GED in Lincoln County;
· the applicant must be en-rolled as a full time student; and · the applicant must have two co-makers, over the age of 18 who are gainfully employed, sign a promissory note.
Six months after graduation the notes become due. At that time, the recipient may pay the amount in full or may make monthly payments for 60 months until
the loan is paid off.
