Man arrested in barbershop slaying

By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer

January 6, 2003 - A Lincolnton man charged with murder in connection with a barbershop shooting was arrested Friday night in Huntersville.

Alvin Dwight Fair, 2357 Lake St., Lincolnton, was arrested at a Huntersville apartment after police received a tip that he had been staying there for a few days, Detective Rick Lynn said.

When Lincolnton police received the tip, they called the Huntersville Police Department.

Fair, 22, was arrested by Huntersville police at around 10 p.m. Friday without incident, Lynn said.

Fair is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death of Jacques Tremayne Shipp, 309 Newcastle Ave.

According to police, Fair was inside the Gentlemen’s Choice Barbershop, 1308 N. Aspen St., Dec. 29.

Shipp, 22, walked into the barbershop, and the two got in a scuffle.

That’s when police say Fair pulled out a handgun and shot Shipp.

Shipp was taken to Lincoln Medical Center by people at the barbershop.

He later died there from his wounds.

Fair is being held without bond and is awaiting his first appearance in Lincoln County District Court today.

According to court records, Fair was convicted in 1998 of possession with intent to sell and distribute cocaine, assault on a female and felony possession of cocaine.

Police believe two recent drive-by shootings were connected with Shipp’s death.

The first shooting occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday when the occupants of a car shot at a house on Catawba Street. The second, which police believe was in retaliation for the first, happened at 1 a.m. on Lee Street.

No further information has been released about those shootings.
