Dispute may have led to truck’s crash

By ALICE SMITH, LTN Staff Writer

January 3, 2003 - A 16-year-old airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center Tuesday following a wreck was discharged later that night, according to a CMC official.

Christopher Waldroup, the driver, and a juvenile passenger were both transported to Lincoln Medical Center after the wreck. The name of the juvenile is not being released, said Trooper Steve Williams of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

From LMC, Waldroup was airlifted to CMC with head and possible spinal injuries, Williams said.

Records indicate that Waldroup is from Gastonia, but there is some discrepancy in his residency.

The wreck was the result of a possible domestic dispute, Williams said.

At around 3:30 p.m., the driver of another truck involved in the wreck picked up a female friend to go to Wal-mart.

Williams said that Waldroup did not like that, so he began following the driver.

According to reports from two independent witnesses, both trucks were going at a high rate of speed around a curve in a residential area on Brady Hoffman Road, Williams said. The speed limit there is 35 mph.

Waldroup drove up beside the other truck, and while passing, collided with it, Williams said.

This could have been intentional, Williams said.

Since Waldroup’s truck was smaller, it took the brunt of the impact, sending it flying off the road, Williams said.

Jesse Tuner, the other driver, told the Lincoln Times-News Tuesday that he was driving on Brady Hoffman Road when Waldroup attempted to pass him. Turner said the truck clipped the front of his truck and jerked to the side.

“They went sliding across the road,” he said. “I looked back through my mirror, and they were flipping. I looked and he (Waldroup) was flying through the air.”

Waldroup was ejected from the truck and landed about 10 feet away.

The truck landed on its roof in the yard of Ronnie Newton, 3034 Brady Hoffman Road. Newton and other family members were inside the house when they heard a loud noise and then saw a tire rolling across their yard.

Witnesses at the scene said drivers speed through that area often.

The patrol has not reported whether charges were filed against either driver.
