United Way celebrates success
By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer
Jan. 30, 2002 - United Way volunteers Tuesday celebrated surpassing fundraising goals despite a rough climate for charity fundraising.
The agency raised $388,000 and expects more to come in before the campaign ends March 1.
Campaign chairman Seth Haney called it a “turnaround year.” Lincoln’s United Way surpassed its goal by $12,000 this year. Last year, the agency did not
meet its $375,000 goal.
Haney credits hard working member agency volunteers who visited work sites to talk about where the money goes.
“When they tell you what they do, you can’t help but want to help out,” he said.
This year, fundraisers tapped new areas including realty professionals and the western Lincoln County community.
“Nobody had tried to do anything out there before,” Haney said. “We were able to grow some things that didn’t exist before, set a good foundation.”
Many charities felt a budget pinch in the wake of a sluggish economy. National charities also received the lion’s share of contributors’ dollars after the
Sept. 11 attack. According to Haney, the United Way was already at 80 percent of its goal when the disaster happened. The campaign was extended to allow time for a rebound.
Board officials and United Way Director Rhonda Sigmon honored volunteers with breakfast Tuesday at the Lincoln Senior Center.
Sigmon praised the people who worked with her.
“I have been extremely fortunate to have had such great support and commitment from those who served as volunteers and board members during this campaign,”
she said. “They have indeed made my job enjoyable and much easier.”
