Morganton’s Daugherty seeks 10th District seat
By ANDIE LEATHERMAN, LTN Staff Writer
Jan. 28, 2002 - A Morganton man hopes to be the 10th Congressional district’s next representative, running on a platform to keep jobs in the United
States or North America.
Ron Daugherty recently announced his candidacy for the seat now held by U.S. Rep. Cass Ballenger, R-Hickory, who is expected to seek re-election.
Daugherty, a lifelong Republican, switched his registration to Democrat, saying GOP leaders are no longer responsive to the electorate.
“As government leaders they can do better for the people,” Daugherty said.
Daugherty owns Miami Threads, a Drexel company making industrial sewing threads. Daugherty started the company in Miami, Fla. and later moved it to North Carolina. He bought a building
formerly owned by the Sara Lee company. He is a Tennessee native. Daugherty’s company employees 15 people.
Daugherty says the United States is becoming a “country of consumers.” He contends that trading partners like China are not buying from the U.S., only selling us goods.
He opposes U.S. membership in the World Trade Organization and attributes local industry closings and slow downs to NAFTA.
Daugherty calls the recent economic slow down a “plague” infecting textiles, furniture, agriculture and trucking.
“America has already lost electronics, toys, shoes, garments and steel and this list is only growing. America cannot be strong if we continue to rely upon our fair weather friends for all
our manufactured goods and agricultural products,” he said.
Daugherty and his wife Amy have three children.
