Tax refunds may be tapped
From staff reports
Jan. 23, 2002 - Owe county taxes? Failed to pay a water or ambulance bill? The money will now come out of your state income tax refund.
County commissioners gave tax administrator Madge Huffman permission to use a clearinghouse set up by the state League of Municipalities and the North Carolina
Association of County Commissioners.
Any bill 60 days over due and more than $50 can be turned in to the clearinghouse for collection. The county will have to pay a $15 fee for each successful collection. That amount cannot be
billed to the person who owes the money, Huffman told commissioners.
The debtor will be notified before the collection procedure starts. Debtors have the right to contest collection efforts and may request a hearing.
The county began last year stepping up efforts to collect back taxes. County attorney Jeff Taylor’s office has gotten involved in going after people who owe.
“We should leave no stone unturned in collection of debt owed the county,” said Huffman.
The City of Lincolnton will vote on using the clearinghouse during its February meeting, Huffman said.
