Something to celebrate
Nov. 21 - It’s about time we have something to celebrate, even if it’s just a traditional Thanksgiving holiday. Enough about anthrax. Enough about the pursuit of Osama Bin Ladin. Enough about who is going to
govern Afghanistan. It’s time to take off, go home and enjoy family and friends.
Thanksgiving is a good break from the chaotic world crisis that has sent so many shock waves through out the nation since Sept. 11. We can turn our thoughts away from that tragedy as we celebrate this holiday and
give thanks for those things we hold dear.
It’s a different nation, of course. And we are a different people. It is evident today that this nation has resolved never again to allow the vulnerabilities that existed before Sept. 11 and to maintain a new
vigilance. With that resolve in mind, we can focus on a favorite American holiday.
According to Dr. Sidney Mintz of Johns Hopkins University, the Thanksgiving meal “reawakens our attachment” to our early homes and helps “define our cultural identity.”
We can enjoy our family activities, go about our Christmas shopping, watch football playoffs and do the things we’ve always enjoyed.
After this reawakening we can come back to work and maybe feel better about things. There are good signs. We seem to be having our way in Afghanistan and are successfully beginning our mission to wipe out terrorism.
Stocks seem to be rising instead of falling. The long string of layoffs and shutdowns continue, but some business leaders sense a turnaround during the first six months of 2002.
Business as usual sounds like a great idea.
