Relay events again earn top recognition

Nov. 19 - Congratulations to organizers and participants in Lincoln County’s two Relay for Life fundraisers who once again won a national ranking.

This year the fundraising effort for the American Cancer Society earned Lincoln the distinction of being the second largest per capita fund raiser in the nation.

John Dancoff, chairman of the Lincolnton Relay, put in perspective.

“It’s as if every person gave $5, every man, woman, and baby in Lincoln County,” Dancoff said. “That would be like knocking on every door in Lincoln County and getting $5 from everyone.”

Dancoff, chairman of the Lincolnton Relay and east Lincoln Relay chairwoman Patsy Black were recognized Tuesday evening at a cross county meeting of Relay for Life volunteer organizers.

This isn’t the first time Lincoln County Relay for Life has been recognized for outstanding fund raising. Last year Lincoln was sixth in the nation in money raised per capita.

This kind of achievement says a lot about our values while reflecting a true understanding of the impact of this killer disease. Most participants have been touched in some way by cancer, and know that modern medical research is on the verge of promising new treatments.

The per capita recognition is based on the amount of money raised within a county, divided by its population.

In Lincoln County, over $285,000 was raised. For 2001, county population was figured at around 58,000. Next year, when new census figures come out, that will likely change, pushing Lincoln to earn more money to get a top ranking.

For its efforts, Lincoln County’s Relay for Life will be recognized in Relay’s national newsletter, a banner will be awarded and a billboard hung in Lincoln County, probably in January.

Relay for Life, the signature fund raising event of the American Cancer Society, is a 24-hour event. In Lincoln County, participants walk laps on the high school tracks, raising money by securing sponsors.

Already organizers are working to kick-off the 2002 east Lincoln events. The Lincolnton Relay will be May 4 and 5 at Lincolnton High School, and the east Lincoln Relay is scheduled April 13 at East Lincoln High School.

We expect the usual, outstanding response.
