Voters can focus on Lincoln primary election
July 29, 2002 - The primary election date has finally been set and Sept. 10 is not that far away. Voters should start doing their homework right away for this short election cycle. And keep in mind, there will
be no runoffs.
. The liquor-by-the drink referendum will be held on Sept. 10, not during the November general election.. The liquor vote will determine if alcoholic beverages can be sold in
Lincoln County. The referendum seeks approval for the sale of beer and wine for off premises consumption, ABC store operations and mixed beverage sales in hotels, restaurants and clubs. If you are saying we’ve already done this you’re probably thinking about the city of Lincolnton referendum in 2001, which passed. The new referendum allows alcoholic beverage sales in the county. All voters in Lincoln County, including those who live in the city of Lincolnton, may participate in this referendum.
In Lincoln County there will be two primary contests, one in House District 97 and another for County Commissioner. Incumbent Rep. Joe Kiser of Vale faces challenger David Noles, who has previously served in
the House in the mid 1980s. Rep. Dan Barefoot, D-Lincolnton, will not seek re-election in the newly drawn district, which most observers consider strongly Republican. However, another Democrat, Floyd Mason of
Denver, will seek the seat but has no opposition in the primary.
Lincoln County is now in Senate District 42, which also includes northeast Gaston County and much of Catawba County. Sen. Jim Forrester of Stanley faces opposition from Ronald Pope of Catawba County in the GOP
primary.
The most crowded race is that for Lincoln County Clerk of Court, an office held by Pam Huskey before she announced her plans to retire. Democrats Patsy Black, Teresa Peeler and Sonny Allen
McSwain are seeking the Democratic nomination. Peeler is now serving as clerk, having been named by the court to carry on the job until the November election. Republicans Jerry Long, Fred Hatley, Darrell Harkey and James (Jim) Hallman are seeking the Republican nomination.
There will be a Republican primary for county commissioners with candidates Dean Lutz, James “Buddy” Funderburke, Carroll Mitchem and David Allan Pratt.
There will be other races on the ballot in and statewide races.
We plan to question the candidates in the primary races on various issues. Stay informed and plan to vote Sept. 10.
