We have celebrated Mother’s Day for as long as most of us can remember in the country. Historical references for such a day go back to ancient Greece and to the “mothering Sunday” of
England in the 1600s. Quick research on the web suggests it was Ana Jarvis of Philadelphia who first campaigned for a national Mother’s Day in 1907. She persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia to
celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death, the second Sunday of May. The idea stemmed from her mother’s long association with Mothers Day Work Clubs in the latter part of the 19th
Century. During the next few years most states adopted the observance. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it an official holiday in 1914. Different countries throughout the world have their own Mothers Day
celebrations.
Today it’s mostly a loving “Thanks, Mom” celebration that often prompts cards and gifts.
To the Moms of Lincoln County who have done so much to make Lincoln County a wholesome place to live, we say thanks, and Happy Mother’s Day.
