UNC should keep airport

May 29, 2002 - The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is one of the few campuses in the nation that has its own airport. You would think that would be a desirable asset for a globally-tuned, institution of higher learning. But UNC doesn’t seem interested in keeping the Horace Williams Airport open. The school has announced that it wants to close the airport to develop a technology park, office, and classroom complex on the thousand-acre tract which would become known as “Carolina North.”

Preventing child abuse

May 13, 2002 - During the month of April we emphasized the need for citizens to have an awareness of child abuse, displaying photos of various citizens receiving awareness month  ribbons. When U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Dole dropped by our office she accepted the pinning of a blue ribbon with some seriousness. “I’d better not be smiling when you take this picture,” she said. “This is about child abuse.” She sensed the seriousness of this topic. We hope the blue ribbons raised a similar awareness in others.

Celebrate local history

May 1, 2002 - Want to dabble in some local history?

Lincoln County will celebrate Historic Preservation Week May 12-18 with a variety of events that not only offer insight into our past but offer some advice on preserving family treasures and assessing the value of antiques. The program offers daily events beginning Sunday, May 12 with a Town Portrait to be taken at Memorial Hall on Pine Street at 12:30 p.m.
