Celebrate local history
May 1, 2002 - Want to dabble in some local history?
Lincoln County will celebrate Historic Preservation Week May 12-18 with a variety of events that not only offer insight into our past but offer some advice on preserving family treasures and assessing the value of
antiques. The program offers daily events beginning Sunday, May 12 with a Town Portrait to be taken at Memorial Hall on Pine Street at 12:30 p.m. A re-opening ceremony and reception will follow. On Monday a Dinner
Gala will be held at the Lincoln Cultural Center featuring research historian Michael Southern of the
State Historic Preservation Office. He has worked with the state’s archives and preservation programs for the past 27 years and will review some Lincoln landmarks.
Debi Hacker of the Chicora Foundation, an author who has written a book on the topic of preserving family treasures, will provide free advice on Tuesday at Memorial Hall. The “Antiques Roadshow” program on Wednesday
will offer valuation on those family heirlooms at the Charles R. Jonas Library, starting at 7 p.m. A special program on the restoration of Memorial Hall will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the hall, featuring
restoration specialist Paul Fomberg.
Of course we have to do a home tour and this year that will include historic homes on South Aspen Street. The tour will start at the Lincoln campus of Gaston College at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
A historic sites tour and archaeological dig are scheduled Saturday at the Daniel. E. Rhyne House, the Michael Hoke House and the Madison Iron Furnace.
The theme for the week is “Preserving the Spirit of Place” and many of these activities are focused on some of Lincoln County’s most historic places. It should provide a good taste of local history.
Some of these events will require the purchase of tickets and advance reservations. Call 704-736-8915 for more information.
