A time for patriotism
Published March 19, 2003
If ever there is a time for patriotism, it is when our service men and women face sacrificing their lives on the battlefield. That is the ultimate act of
allegiance. Whatever we think about President Bush’s decision to go to war in Iraq, we should support the hundreds of thousands of troops who must carry out that decision. We can show that support by offering our
comfort and encouragement to their families and friends who face the long and difficult wait during a time of war. Many here in Lincoln County are spouses, mothers, fathers,
children, grandparents, siblings, uncles and aunts of these soldiers who are performing the ultimate service for their country.
The Lincoln County Chapter of the American Red Cross is sponsoring a military support group that meets each Monday at 7 p.m. at the Red Cross office on
North Aspen Street. Family members can find others in their same situation and receive counseling at these meetings. In case of family emergency, the Red Cross stands ready to offer assistance.
The local American Legion Post is responding to requests from military units for foot powder, socks, batteries, gum and other items. Contact Post Commander
Dale Punch at 704-735-8509 for more information.
Lincoln is blessed with a strong church community and we know our ministers will lead us in the spiritual support that helps so many people get through a
crisis.
The Bush administration is facing criticism throughout the world for rushing into a conflict many say should be avoided until the international community
reaches a consensus on whether or not Saddam Hussein has fully disarmed its weapons of mass destruction.
But today, President George Bush is our commander-in-chief, the leader we elected to represent us in grave, international matters, and there are many issues
to deal with in an era of terrorism. Many Americans accept his action on Iraq as a decision made on the basis of the informed leadership we have come to expect of our president.
The wisdom of his action will be gauged in the months ahead. We are, after all, a democracy that will decide the conduct of our leadership through the
elective process. As always, the American people will have the last say on whether this was, indeed, a wise move. Until then, we should show our strong support for those who are willing to lay down their lives for
this nation.
