Learn more about your schools at Parent Forum

March 22, 2002 - Our schools and especially our teachers are under more pressure than ever before to improve test scores and assure that every student is getting the instructional help needed for academic advancement. To carry out this mission the student’s parents must be involved. Too often they are not. When you talk about problems in today’s public schools the issue of parent indifference surfaces over and over again

Cherryville holding too many closed meetings

March 15, 2002 - A city council that finds it necessary to constantly shut out the public from its meetings is doing a disservice to the citizens it serves.

It is understandable for an elected body to hold some closed sessions on personnel matters, particularly when salary and promotions are under consideration. Elected bodies also enter executive sessions to consider contractual matters and to receive legal advice. But such sessions should be brief and infrequent. In Cherryville, the council held ten closed sessions in 2001 and four this year. That’s too many.

North Lincoln Knights

March 15, 2002 - North Lincoln Knights. It has a nice ring to it.

What’s really pleasing about the selection of this name is that it was made by the students who will be attending Lincoln County’s newest school, scheduled to open in 2003. A 25-member committee of students who will attend the school chose the name and did the research. Assistant Superintendent Ed Hatley said the students took their mission seriously. “I have never seen kids do so much research,” he said.

MLK Jr. holiday worth celebrating

March 6, 2002 - Lincoln County commissioners on Monday wisely approved a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday for county employees. It’s an action that would be much more worthy of accolades if it were not so long in coming. Lincoln was one of only 10 of the 100 North Carolina county governments in the state that did not observe the holiday. Chairman Jerry Cochrane seemed to recognize the tardiness of the action with the comment “sorry it took so long.” The city of Lincolnton has also overlooked the observance, and should follow suit. City officials are expected to take up the issue.

Make the Lincoln courthouse secure

March 1, 2002 - It’s rather strange that Lincoln County law enforcement officers are training for unlikely terrorist attacks while ignoring a very real security threat in their own courthouse.

Anyone remotely familiar with the kind of traffic that churns around a criminal courtroom and the tense emotions aroused during a trial should recognize the need for security. But for some reason — perhaps related to money and staff — Lincoln County has allowed this volatile situation to continue.
