Learn more about your schools at Parent Forum

March 22, 2002 - Our schools and especially our teachers are under more pressure than ever before to improve test scores and assure that every student is getting the instructional help needed for academic advancement. To carry out this mission the student’s parents must be involved. Too often they are not. When you talk about problems in today’s public schools the issue of parent indifference surfaces over and over again .

This weekend parents have an opportunity to become involved in the education of their children. It’s a great opportunity to counter the argument of indifference.

Lincoln County Schools’ Fourth Annual Parent Forum will be held at East Lincoln High School from 8 a.m. to noon. The Parent Forum was organized four years ago as a way to give parents and guardians of students better insight into how our schools serve their students.

During the event, parents attend two one-hour classroom sessions, which are facilitated by Lincoln County administrators, teachers and staff, invited experts, and community members. For parents of younger children, special emphasis is placed on getting the child ready for success in school. Sessions on middle school focus on study skills and homework tips, preparing for the transition to high school. Of special interest to both middle and high school parents are topics that deal with SAT strategies, scholarship and financial aid, and the Lincoln County School of Technology. Latino families may want to learn more about English as a Second Language courses offered by the school district.

Do you have a special problem with your kids learning? Our community has a lot of resources that may help, and you can learn about them at the forum.

After the classroom sessions, parents  may go to the cafeteria where they may talk with representatives of 20 county and state agencies that provide services for children. Participating agencies include Lincoln Counseling Center, Hospice, Lincoln County Sheriff’s office, Pathways, I-Care, Lincoln County Health Department, College Tech Prep, Partnership for Children, New Horizons, Families for Kids, Lincoln County Literacy Council and more.

Don’t let your pre-schoolers hold you back. Child care is available for children over three years of age who are toilet trained.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about your schools, and we hope it doesn’t stop Saturday. Lincoln County has some excellent classroom teachers who can accomplish a with an involved parents.
