Local fundraisers benefit us all

February 12, 2003 - The next few months are traditionally a busy time in Lincoln County for local fundraisers, including major events sponsored by the Lincolnton/Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce.

Mark your calendars for the  Mardi Gras Dance Friday, March 7 from 8 to 12 p.m. at the VFW in Lincolnton. This is a combination dance, party, feast and fundraiser, with proceeds going for local scholarships. Tickets are $25 and are available at the chamber.

The chamber’s annual Adult Spelling Bee will be held March 25 at the Citizens Center. Teams from schools, churches, businesses and organizations compete in this important fundraiser, which also funnels money to local scholarships. This is a fun event in which some teams even bring their own cheerleaders. If you haven’t participated, give it a try and you’ll keep coming back. Any team can enter for a $100 fee. Call the chamber (704-735-3096) for more information.

On Tuesday Feb. 18, the Kiwanis Club of Lincolnton will hosts its annual Spaghetti Supper at Battleground Elementary School to benefit the Terrific Kids Program. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children.

The Lincoln County Team Captain’s Kick-off & Rally for the March of Dimes WalkAmerica was held this week. The five-mile walk scheduled March 29 at Betty Ross Park will include some 25 teams. For further information, call 1-800-273-2009. This effort raises money to prevent birth defects.

Fundraising efforts are now under way for Lincoln County’s Relay for Life events, scheduled in east Lincoln April 4-5 at East Lincoln High School, and in Lincolnton May 2-3 at Lincolnton High School. Relay for Life is the signature activity for the American Cancer Society and is the nation’s biggest fundraising event. In recent years, the funding efforts of ACS have resulted in promising new research in the battle against cancer.

We urge everyone to participate in these events or at least open up your pocketbooks when volunteers come around asking for contributions.
