 Editorial - January 2003

Another great effort by United Way volunteers

January 15, 2003 - Congratulations to Lincoln County’s United Way for achieving its $400,000 goal during some difficult economic times. It was the second goal achievement for Director Rhonda Sigmon, who became executive director in 2001. In her first year — also sluggish economically — the campaign exceeded its goal by some 16 percent, raising a total of $435,000. It might not do quite that well this year, but is currently $1,000 beyond its goal.

“The support from the community has been awesome through this year,” Sigmon said.

Although United Way’s target has been met, the organization will continue asking for donations right up to the campaign’s conclusion on March 1. Any additional money that is collected will be sent to one of the 15 local non-profit agencies that draw support from United Way.

Member agencies provided services to more than 40,000 people last year. The groups benefiting from the fundraiser include the American Red Cross, the Lincoln County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Communities in Schools and many others, including the newest participant, Special Olympics. Helping Hands, the new health clinic for the indigent, may be signed on for next year.

Pacesetting businesses included Alpharma, BB&T, Belk-Lincoln Center, Carolina Mills, Carolina Trust Bank, First Charter, First Citizens Bank, First Federal Savings Bank, La-Z-Boy Chair, Lincoln Medical Center, Peoples Bank and the Timken Co. They deserve a lot of the credit for giving the campaign a jump start that generated some 25 percent of the total collections.

Some questions were recently raised about the effectiveness of the well-staffed United Way operations in the Charlotte area. We are happy to report that the overhead of The United Way in Lincoln County is one person, Rhonda Sigmon. The rest of the work is carried on by volunteers. Jeff Hedrick, the chairman from Piedmont Natural Gas., and United Way President Seth Haney of the Timken Co. led the effort. They deserve a lot of credit along with all of the other volunteers and the area businesses that participated.
