Measures to enhance school security may receive final approval from the Lincoln County Board of Education during its regular monthly meeting Tuesday.
Board members on the Building and Site Committee signed off last week on some changes to planned security improvements that had been in the works for several months.
The recent changes would balance the security improvements against existing fire-safety standards to ensure that additional doors and locks don’t prevent easy exit from a school during an emergency.
Most schools would be upgraded with magnetic card-swipe doors for staff entry, surveillance cameras, upgraded fire alarms and controlled visitor-entry doors using a buzzer.
Board members may also discuss the costs for various remaining options for additional security at some schools were the existing facility layout required solutions different from those at most of the schools.
All of the measures come in response to concerns about intruders at schools following last year’s massacre at an elementary school in Connecticut. Most of the local expenses may be covered by excess bond funds, but a final determination of costs is still being made.

The board meets 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the schools headquarters building on North General’s Boulevard in Lincolnton. The meeting is open to the public.
